Our personal lives are becoming increasingly intertwined with data-enabled technologies and applications. On a daily basis, we check our phones an average of 150 times a day. We rely on apps such as Runkeeper, Fitbit, and Mint to uncover trends about ourselves from eating and sleeping to banking and health, forming habitual, self-improvement patterns in response. We’re diagnosing and discovering our personal lives nearly 24/7 and it’s not even a second thought. It’s clear: we’re hooked on data.

This same phenomenon is happening at work. Big-data companies are ditching the spreadsheets and realizing the new era of data habits in the workplace: the kind of power, functionality and usability that brings data intelligence to the hands of any line-of-business worker.

Just the way we increase our Twitter and Facebook habits with more feedback, companies are increasingly engaging with their data as it becomes bite-sized, fluid, color rich, and natural. As engagement increases, so to will the the consumption and creation of data. Our goal should be to help people collaborate around their data insights and feel the same way about work-related big data as they feel about their increasingly mobile, quantifiable self.

In this session, ClearStory Data cofounder and CEO Sharmila Shahani-Mulligan will examine:
-The anatomy of a data habit
-The challenges of making big-data useful for the everyday knowledge worker
-The back-end requirements and latest innovations needed to bring this reality to bear, including a unique perspective on Apache Spark’s open-source engine
-The front-end innovations, usability and design choices that can help make good on the promise of big data in the workplace.
